How Does Reflexology Work
Reflexology is an holistic therapy that uses the foot as a map of the whole body. By applying pressure to certain parts of the feet, the whole body can be "re-tuned" and brought back into balance.
The aim is to stimulate our body's own healing processes in order to keep us balanced. If one area of the body is out of balance then other areas will be too.
It encourages both relaxation and stimulation. The first helps the body rebuild its energy levels and recover from illness whereas the second activates the circulatory and nervous systems, making both function more effectively.
So - is it a foot massage?
Not exactly, It uses massage techniques but, unlike massage, reflexology works with the feet as anatomical "maps" of the whole body. By applying pressure to one part of the foot, the reflexologist aims to benefit not only the feet but also the rest of the body.
So - is it a medical treatment?
No, but it can help maintain and restore health. The reflexologist can detect imbalances in the body by working on the feet and then works on problem areas accordingly to help correct them. However, it is not a cure, more a helping hand for the body's self-healing systems.
